Discover the Beauty of Math – Video recordings of 6 classes to discover the beauty of math

During the summer of 2014, I had the pleasure of presenting a series of six lectures titled Discovering the Beauty of Math to a select group of middle and high school students in Atlanta. The goal of this series was not teaching children techniques of math or problem solving, but to present them with the inherent beauty of math and thousands of years of history behind it. Ultimately, the mission of these sessions was to create interest in Math and hopefully a life long interest in Math for the children. It was a phenomenal success with great reviews from both children and parents.

A good friend of mine, Vamsi, took the time to video record all the sessions and edit them in a presentable format. I shared the parent’s introductory session in a previous blog post on this blog. You will find it on this blog by going back a few pages or by searching for Discovering the Beauty of Math in the search box. The 6 class videos were earlier only shared with the children who attended the program and their parents. For the first time, these videos will be exclusively shared on this blog in a series of 6 posts through our Youtube channel.

The six lecture titles are:

  1. The Language of Nature
  2. Platonic Solids
  3. The Story of Pi
  4. The Big picture of Algebra, Calculus and Probability and their colorful history
  5. Fermat’s Last Theorem
  6. The Million-dollar Math problems

Here is the first one. Be patient while watching these videos as each of these are about 1.5 to 2 hr long and are optimized for face-to-face teaching and not for video-recording. Don’t miss the nuggets such as historical math timelines from prehistoric human beings through Mesopotamian/Egyptian civilizations/classical Greek period through Indian/Chinese/Arab contributions to modern times, as well as how each topic fits into this timeline.
